Produce

Range

We aim to offer a comprehensive range of fruits and vegetables throughout the whole year. Whilst we recognize that most customers prefer to buy UK grown seasonal produce, we also understand that many of you like to offer staples, such as apples, pears, onions and tomatoes for every week of the year. Our aim, therefore, is to prioritise the sourcing of local and UK crops, but to bring in a wide range of other lines from our continental suppliers to supplement.

You can view a typical list of the range we offer by clicking on the appropriate season below.

Quality

Maintaining high quality throughout the whole range of produce that we offer is a high priority at Phoenix. We also believe that quality is a much larger issue than simply the cosmetic appearance of the crop, being much more to do with the merit of an organic production system rather than the artificial constraint of an arbitrary supermarket specification. We try very hard to balance the interests of organic producers, whose crops do not come in uniform shapes and sizes, with those of consumers who need to be assured that the produce they are purchasing is as fresh as possible, is sound, free from pests and disease and typical of the shape and colour that is expected.

We believe that we understand the needs of our individual customers and work hard to ensure that the quality we despatch is appropriate for them. We are also very proactive in contacting customers to advise them of occasions when quality may be inappropriate, perhaps due to weather conditions, and to discuss what alternatives we can offer.

Origin

Much of our produce is grown local to us in the West Midlands. We plan crop production and work very closely with a number of organic farmers and growers both within our region, but also elsewhere in the UK. The majority of our fruit supply and our out of season vegetables need to come from abroad, and we have some very close ties with producers in France, Spain and Italy. With the increasing demand for organic produce, we feel that it is important to maintain strong links with a range of suppliers, so that we can rely on continuity throughout the season.

In-conversion

From time-to-time we do supply in-conversion produce. This produce is grown on land that is in the process of being converted to organic and where there are no artificial pesticides or fertilizers used on the crops other than those allowed by the certifying body. We believe that the production of in-conversion produce should be encouraged and supported in order to support farmers who wish to become fully organic. Should we list any such crops they will always be fully highlighted on both our pricelists and invoices.
